This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard biological terror, but inside Together resides a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when the couple transition from the big city to the countryside for her career. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He fears the notion of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that come with long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
