The Former President's Framework of Consequences and Incentives

Donald Trump's intense appetite for revenge has quickly evolved into a methodical apparatus. Within the year since his election, the leader's anger and impulses have adopted the guise of official policies in ways analogous to past repressive systems. Government figures who fail to comply are summarily fired and succeeded by devotees. Critical figures who question him risk prosecution, trial and punishment. Opponents have been labeled under administration directives as “unpatriotic”, “anti-Christian” and “against free markets”, and threatened with legal action as “extremists”.

Government Institutions Restructured

Each case involving legal action of political opponents and protection for supporters exhibits its own distinct features. But, regardless of their particular nature, they embody examples of what has developed as a deliberate approach. Such incidents are not random. Trump's removal of DoJ prosecutors and FBI personnel, coupled with his placement of devotees in key positions, commenced rapidly, soon developed a pattern, and has now been formed into a structure. The justice department and the Federal Bureau have been transformed into partisan bodies under the president's explicit direction to implement his demands. Injustice has been made normal. This is the apparatus of revenge.

Management is focused with punishing the leader's perceived enemies than they are with defending our public welfare.

Within the Apparatus

The foundation of this mechanism has been exposed in the legal complaint of three former senior FBI officials submitted in late summer in the judicial system in Washington against top official an administration figure and justice department head a key figure for unlawful firing in “a effort of retribution against the officials for what the accused considered to be a refusal to demonstrate proper political loyalty”. The document states that Brian Driscoll, the ex- interim leader, details a discussion in which he “freely acknowledged the illegality of his actions”.

He had attempted to defend agency personnel from being fired, the lawsuit states. The director told him that “they” – interpreted by Driscoll to be the executive branch and DoJ – had directed him to fire everyone who they identified as having been involved in a law enforcement case against him. The complaint goes on: “Patel stated that he had to terminate the people his bosses told him to fire, because his chance to keep his own role relied on the removal of the officials who were involved in matters involving the leader. The director explained that there was no way he or Driscoll could do to halt these or any other firings, because ‘the FBI sought to place the President in detention and he recalls it clearly.’” When the official advised the director he was violating the bureau's own regulations, the director reportedly said “he understood that and he realized the nature of the swift terminations were likely improper”.

Broad Effects

After his claimed acknowledgment to the official, the DoJ and the law enforcement agency have been weakened and reorganized for the administration's revenge apparatus. Several of the bureau's senior executives were fired or forced out in the first days of the administration. Approximately thousands of professional attorneys at DoJ have accepted a “deferred resignation program”. No fewer than multiple DoJ lawyers, such as those in the southern district of New York, quit in dissent over what they viewed as political interference in dropping the corruption case against the local official, a political figure, in as a trade for his collaboration with Trump's federal agency roundups of immigrants. The public integrity section of the department, which handles misconduct investigations, has been cut down to minimal staff. The rights protection unit has been devastated: seventy percent of its personnel has resigned. A third of senior leaders at the justice department have quit. The unit upholding conservation statutes has experienced the exit of half its management.

Rewards and Penalties

Regarding the legal matter, the acting US attorney for the NY office, Danielle Sassoon, quit in dissent against what she characterized as the “quid pro quo”. Tom Homan, his “enforcement chief,” was present as the enforcer with him on Fox News to announce: “Unless he complies, I'll reappear in New York City.”. Meanwhile, a former official, earlier the justice department figure and a past legal representative, who brokered the deal, was awarded an court role, a likely springboard to the highest court.

His exemption for crimes perpetrated while in power, awarded by the remarkable judgment of the Republican majority on the highest court, thus thwarting his legal action over the Capitol riot and maintaining his public standing for the presidential race, is the foundation stone on which he stands to defend his stalwarts. With such immunity, he has been empowered to permit misconduct. The consequence of the judicial ruling infuses his presidency and the Republican Party down to its bones. The legal case has escalated. In the words of Richard Nixon's administration lawyer the figure said about the Watergate
